About
The Town Moderator:

* presides over and is responsible for conducting Town Meetings in a fair and impartial way
* decides all questions of order and who shall address the Town Meeting
* makes public declaration of all votes
* appoints the members of the Town Government Study Committee
* together with the Board of Selectmen and the School Committee, appoints the Groton representative to the Nashoba Valley Regional Technical School Committee
* appoints certain ad hoc committees, as directed by Town Meeting

The position dates from the establishment of the Town in 1655, when Moderators were elected for the duration of each Town Meeting session. In 1938, this position was added to the list of regularly elected Town Officials.
