The Emergency Management Radio Officers, under the direction of the Emergency Management Agency, operate the Radio Amateur Communication Emergency Service (RACES).

The Emergency Management Radio Officers are local residents who are licensed ham radio operators. They volunteer to maintain communications with state and local emergency personnel when other equipment cannot be operated because of power failures in times of natural or man-made disasters. The are appointed annually be the Select Board, are unpaid, and the number of officers depends to some extent on the number of residents who volunteer. They are trained and take part in the usual test procedures with other emergency personnel.
